City of Angels

Recently, I've been on a meditational tip and through this soul searching journey I've been informed and educated about angels. Even guardian angels. It peaked my curiousity and I came across the movie "City of Angels" once again. I had seen parts of the movie on the one of these women networks like "Oxygen" or "W" a few months back. When I read the description of what the movie was about, it pulled at my heart-strings and emotionally I felt like it would be something I'd like to enjoy watching.

So, I cued it up and finally got to sit down and watch it. Wow...I was pretty disappointed.

The story is about an angel (Nicolas Cage) who falls in love with a heart surgeon (Meg Ryan). He comes oddly fascinated by her but he cannot touch her, smell her and be with her as he isn't human. He makes the decision to become human...for her.

As dramatic as the story sounds, I was hoping for something that would make me feel emotionally attached and in awe of their love, yet, I felt like I was longing for more. I didn't really see the connection between the two even though I'm sure the directors tried. I was left feeling like I wanted more out of it. There was some nice moments through the cheese though. The scenes showing how the angels are supporting and comforting us in our times of despair seemed realistic to me. I could relate to times when I know God was watching over me and saved me from some bad times. There was also a nice scene with the two in the library when Nick meets Meg in the library.

There also is an amazing song on the sountrack by Alanis Morissette called "Uninvited". The song meaning seems to be interpreted differently by many people. Some say it's about a stalker or rape, while others defend that since it's on the "City of Angels" soundtrack, it must relate to the relationship between the two lovers and the fact that they can't be together. I think that makes more sense, no?

I give this movie
No chemistry, had higher expectations, few good moments
