The Switch & The Expendables...DRIVE-IN!!!

Did somebody say DRIVE-IN?!!!

I don't know what it is about going to the drive-in that makes me so giddy but I just love it. Maybe it's my love for movies, warm summer nights and good company. So I hit up my Sunday Night Movie Crew...(Shout-outs to “Malibu D & M” for another late night flick to rate.

The two options at the drive-in was “Piranha 3D” & “The Other Guys” playing back to back in Lot 1.  Lot 2 was playing “The Switch” and “The Expendables”. We were torn between what to do as we already saw “The Other Guys” two weeks ago and we weren’t in the mood for a mushy chick flick starring Jennifer Aniston. Now, if “Piranha” & “The Expendables” were both playing in the same lot, we would have hit the jackpot…but that wasn’t the case.

We opted to see “Piranha 3D” and decided we’d just leave after that. However, we realized once buying the tickets that “Piranha 3D” wasn’t actually 3D in the drive-in. It was just the normal movie theater quality. We got disappointed and decided that we’d rather get more bang for our buck and watch two movies (even if one was a romantic comedy) as opposed to watching one film that didn’t even have the 3D feature. So we wheeled around, got our refund and headed to Lot 2.

As we sat through “The Switch”…we couldn’t help but lose focus and look to the left at Lot 1 which seemed to have a lot more action going on as the fearful fishies feasted on young drunken teens. “D” and “M” were mainly distracted by the “Gossip Girl” beauty, Jessica Szohr, …but can you blame them?

She’s gorgeous! And I don’t think they cared to see another movie where Jennifer is screwed by love so she decides to get artificial insemination. Heck, I didn’t even care to see this movie.

It’s a film about a woman who reaches 40 yrs old and decides to turn to a turkey baster in order to get pregnant.  Seven years later, she reunites with her best friend who’s been keeping a secret: He’s replaced her preferred sperm with his own.

While it did have some “cute” moments, it just didn’t do it for me. I wasn’t feeling the chemistry between Jen Aniston and Jason Bateman. The storyline didn’t seem believable and even though I’m all for fantasy, it didn’t have enough of a “wow” factor to make me believe or even want this to love story to be true. However, if this movie seems like something you care to spend your money on, go for it. We were talking throughout most of the movie because it didn’t have enough moments to keep us interested. So, maybe I missed out on some moments that were actually good…but I doubt it.
I give this movie…
Cool storyline, no chemistry and boring

Next up…”The Expendables” starring pure retro action stars from the 80’s and 90’s. Mickey Rourke, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis and Jet Li are just a few of the stars that were featured in this movie that was directed by Stallone, himself. All that was missing was Wesley Snipes.

A few weeks ago, I saw the ads for this movie in the subway stations and “D” was making fun of how these dudes are trying to make a comeback. As funny as he described it, I still thought it would look interesting enough to watch.
This movie is about a team of mercenaries who head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.

While the storyline seemed weak, I think it’s a cool idea to bring all the retired action hero’s back to the big screen in hopes of resuscitating their careers. I’m sure it helped influence some mid-life crisis’s for men who want to see if they “still got it” and will be hitting the gym heavily in order to achieve Sylvester’s arms.

There were also some super cheesy moments regarding Stallone and his chase to rescue this woman he can’t seem to get out of his head. Also, Rourke had a cheese-fest of a moment with his speech about “saving his soul” that I could have lived without watching. I must say though, that the action scenes were tough, exciting and moved super fast. There is a lot of fighting and violence but it was enough to make us shut up and watch it at least. My fave scene has to be when Jason Statham defends his ex-girlfriend’s (Charisma Carpenter) honor after he sees a bruise on her face from her current beau. Charisma just turned 40 mind you…uh huh…she looks damn good! Another good scene was Jet Li showcasing his fancy fighting footwork as he defeats the bad guys. Question: Does Jet Li age?

I think Stallone looks pretty good for his age but the guys argued that he’s been pumping roids and laughed their asses off at his scene where he’s running by the train. I have to say that if I didn’t find it funny at first, they sure made me laugh many times by pointing out the star’s comeback moves.

I rate this movie…
Action packed, good cast, bad storyline
