The Great Debaters

My good friend "T" recommended me to watch "The Great Debaters" starring Denzel Washington yesterday so I took the advice and cued it up.

It is based on a true story that took place in 1935 about a teacher named Melvin B. Tolson who inspired students to form the school's first debate team. Dealing with racial limitations, the debate team surpassed all obstacles by challenging Harvard in the national championship.

Denzel was of course phenomenal in his role as Mr. Tolson. Forest Whitaker was amazing as always in his role as Dr. James Farmer. And, I have to give props to the actors who played the intellectual, heart warming debate team ; Denzel Whitaker, Nate Parker and Jumee Smollet. It's funny because I wondered how come Dr. James Farmer's son looked so much Forest (but it's his real son).

There were some touching historical moments and some of the debates did give me chills. It must not have been easy living in 1935 as a Black man or woman and it was inspiring to see this debate team break the boundaries of prejudice.

I thought I'd share a scene that I love in the movie...Enjoy!

I give this movie...
inspiring, heartrending, educational
